Putting the Happy Back into the Holidays
For some, this time of the year is especially challenging...
The phrase "happy holidays" can sometimes feel like a stark contrast to the reality of grief, loss, and the challenges that the holiday season can bring. For many of us, this is the most difficult time of the year. Maybe you’re grappling with the absence of loved ones, broken relationships, or personal difficulties. However, amidst the struggles, there are ways to rediscover joy and create a holiday season that is meaningful to you.
Cut Yourself Some Slack
Recognize that you don't have to conform to societal expectations of a perfect holiday season. Give yourself the grace to forgo traditional celebrations if they add to your burdens. The holidays are also about your well-being, so give yourself permission to follow your own path and fulfill your own desires and preferences—even if they deviate from tradition.
Consider New Traditions
Breaking away from conventional traditions can be liberating for some, while mixing old traditions and new experiences is the perfect balance for others. I have found that intentionally planning new experiences has been the most healing for me. Consider doing something entirely different that brings you comfort, steering away from the weight of past traditions. It's a transformative way to infuse the holidays with renewed meaning.
Always Have Something to Look Forward To
Add some variety to your holiday traditions and embrace the unexpected. Whether it's a small tweak to long-standing traditions or the creation of completely new ones, having something to look forward to will bring new optimism and hope to the season.
Share Joy with Others
Redirecting your focus towards helping those in need can bring profound joy. Whether it's extending a helping hand, offering words of encouragement, or simply lending a listening ear, engaging in acts of kindness can provide a sense of purpose and fill you with joy.
Honoring Loved Ones
Acknowledging and remembering a family member in a special way during the holidays can be a meaningful healing process. The key is to do so in a manner that feels right for you, without any sense of obligation. Reflect on the positive memories and find ways to integrate their presence into your celebrations.
As we navigate through the holiday season, it's essential to recognize that all emotions are valid. Healing is a personal journey, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Let this season be an opportunity for self-discovery, self-compassion, and finding joy in unexpected places. You are not alone. I’d love to hear from you in a comment how you plan to uplift your spirits during the holidays, as we support one another in putting the happy back into the holidays.

Oh boy, this is such a great column. Hopefully all of it will help anyone who needs it. I love going to see all the different Nativity scenes put up by all the churches in our area. The lights that people put up are cheerful, too. Thank you for remembering everyone Peggy, and Merry Christmas Peggy & Pastor, and also to all readers & commenters🎄😇
Helpful suggestions now that I am alone. Watching The Nutcracker today on YouTube.
